    Crossing Cabo Verde - Trinidad

We try to update this page regularly day via the satelite. However, due to numerous reasons (too tired, no electricity, etc.) we may skip a day. Tomorrow is another day.

"Saterday and sunday, they are closed; monday they work, but maybe only on the airport". "Come back later", the people at the customs say. Jaap has to go there 4 times before he finally gets the mandatory exit-stamps. We resist the temptation to eat our last delicious Cape Verdian omelet. We want to go, before we find reasons not to leave at all.

It's busy on the pontoon. Excited, important French are walking up and down. One of the participants of the Vendee Globe (race around the world, non stop, solo) is coming in. He has a broken backstay. The harbourmaster is ofcourse sorry for the guy, but he is very happy with this extra publicity for his (excellent) harbour.

We hardly left the harbour or there the Maître Coq enters the bay on a tiny piece of main sail. Itīs sad to see a defeted racer. That night his competitor overtakes us with at least 13 knots.

We are sailing fine, also because of the accelaration zone between the islands. But once in the lee of the islands the wind disappears, the waves are confused and our GPS canīt find its satellites any more. We start the engine and leave this small area full of anomalies. Then everything returns to normal. A little bit more wind, would be nice. But we are happy.

Thinking of the omelet we denied ourselves earlier, we decide to keep it simple tonight and bake an egg. I open the container with eggs and a horrible smell comes out. They are rotten, with tiny white and black animals walking on them. Quickly I close the lid again and we throw our stock of eggs overboard. Unfortunatly, the plastic container isnīt allowed overboard, so we clean it with salt water and alcolhol and store it far away outside in the lazaret.

Our new electronic navigation program "Nimble Navigator" we bought in Las Palmas, has deleted itself. "Hum", Mike the importer, says when we call him, "that sometimes happens". He will send a new one to Antigua, but thatīs no use for us now. We continue on our old programms. And ofcourse we still have our paper charts and the sextant! Hum, we must start studying the celestial course.

Eten, slapen, eten, slapen, eten, slapen, eten, slapen...

Eating, sleeping, eating, sleeping, eating, sleeping, eating, sleeping...
That covers it more or less for today, apart from checking the sails and all the lines.

By now we have a lot of ropes and lines on deck. The spinnaker pole alone already has an extra 4 to control the up- down- back- and forward movements. The main sail has 2 extra preventers next to the regular preventer. And the windvane has two lines to the steering wheel and two lines to the doghouse.
We are used to it now, and know them by heart.

The wind picks up a little bit, and we make an average of 6+ knots. With this wind and with an ocean that more looks like a lake, we donīt reef down for the night. Itīs going fine this way.

163 442 1732 15°30'N - 032°30'W ENE 4

Rare beesten. Ze zijn keihard en stinken enorm.

A milestone today: we pass 30° West*. We have to adjust the clock. Now itīs one hour earlier.

* The world is more or less round. So 360°.
360 / 24 (hours) = 15. Every 15 degrees extra distance east- or westward between us and Greenwich, means one hour time difference. Since we sail westward, itīs now one hour earlier. (The first hour we already compensated at the Cabo Verde).

This night we also donīt reef down, although we think we had a mini-squall (showers + gusts). Margalliti is not over-powered and easily handles some extra wind.

First thing we do in the morning is a check-round on deck and removing the flying fish. Ugly fish: they are very very stiff and stink like hell.

The solar panel is doing its best and the LED-lights are great, but the old-new waterpump for the fridge consumes to much power. However, it doesnīt help when there are too many clouds or when the sun disappears behind the mainsail at about 14.00 hrs. We change sails and set the main sail on starboard side. This gives the panel an extra couple of hours of sunshine.

However, every day now we let thet engine run for two hours. Nothing to be ashamed of.
When the engine starts itīs like happy hour at the power-outlet. The Ipod, Ipad, e-reader, VHF, camera, laptop and readinglamp all want to get charged. And we still think we are basic sailors!

Already some hours I think the boomvang is acting strangly or at least differently. So, just before sunset Jaap goes on another inspection round. And yes, the boom and the boomvang are trying to free themselves from the mast. We did check all these bolts in the gooseneck before we left Mindelo. Obviously we have to stay alert!

At dusk we finally see a ship again. A big cargo-ship, on collision course. We call him and he promises to give way, which he does. The MV Corona is on its way to Brasil.

151 731 1443 14°42'N - 037°27'W NE 3-4

Actually, everything is going fine. We didnīt expect the crossing to be this easy. Fingers crossed that it stays this way.

However, the nights are pretty exhausting, more gusts, nasty swell, overcast and poor visibility. Also the squalls (although not more than some drizzle) we donīt like. All the hadges have to be closed and consequently inside itīs like an oven.

During the day as well as during the night the temperature is between something like 25° and 30° Celsius. Very comfortable, unless there is no ventilation.

Small hardship:
we have to slow done on coffee. I based my stock on normal consumption plus extra, but at the moment we drink 5 times as much. So now, only halve a mug! (And unfortunately we canīt compensate with wine, because we already started there with a minimum stock).

Tomorrow the ARC leaves Las Palmas for St. Lucia. How excited everybody will be today doing final preparations and what a commotion tomorrow when all 260 ships leave the marina at the same time.

148 879 1295 14°21'N - 039°58'W ENE 4-5

The weatherforcast we get through the FBB (a wonderfull piece of equipment) looks fine for the coming week. Still ENE 4-5, with a bit of force 6 tomorrow. Perfect for us. We donīt have to sail around nasty storms or motor through areas with no wind at all. We can sail in one straight line to Trinidad. Direction and force are perfect for a speed of 6 to 7,5 knots.

The GPS is constantly calculating the ETA. At 7,5 knots we will be on the beach celebrating Jaapīs birthday with Piņa Coladaīs and at 6 knots we still eat the "pepernoten" at sea (= 5 december). What will it be?
Actually we shouldnīt be bothered by ETAīs and speed, but we should enjoy the moment...

Our watch system is 3 hours on and 3 hours off. with four hours we get bored and with two hours we donīt manage to get enough sleep. At our "platvoetwacht" from 16.00 - 19-00 hrs. we are both awake and drink a little beer, cook and eat. The highlight of the day!

All garbage is divided in organic and not-organic. The first we throw overboard and the last category we cut into tiny little bits and stuff it into a 5-liter water-bottle. Screw the lid back on for nasty smell. Perfect. After almost a week we still donīt have a full bottle.

By the way, just for fun one more little distance-speed item:
Still to go to Trinidad is approximately the same distance as Portimão to Zierikzee. And that bit we did last year in august in about 10 days.

156 1035 1139 13°58'N - 042°38'W ENE 5-6

Onze echte horizon is overigens verbazingwekkend dichtbij.

"Anything happening?", we ask each other when we start our watch. "No, nothing...", is the answer already for a long time. A little bit boring it is.

As usual, the predicted force 6 comes earlier. The whole night itīs very bumpy and we bounce like skippyballs through the ship.

And itīs not only us that move and bump. Everything moves and chaves. No wonder that things get broken, when you realize that every 5 seconds the boat dives in a wave. Thatīs 15x per minute, = 720x per hour, = 17.280x per day! Even the strongest warp will breake that way.

Not really a milestone, but for now it will do: If we could look beyond the horizon to the south, we wouldnīt be seeing Antarctica anymore, but we will see the north coast of Brasil. You could say, we are almost there!

By the way, the real horizon is suprisingly close by. If the height of the eye of the observer is at 2 meters, the horizon is at apprx. 3 nm (= 5,5 km). Our world is only very small.

Vlaggetjesdag!*

1087 mijl gedaan, 1087 mijl to go.

163 mijl in 24 uur.

Even gezellig gepraat. Leuk hoor!

  Celebration day!*

* Our (diary) days are from 12.00 hrs till 12.00 hrs the next day.

At 20.00 hrs we cross the half-way point. 1087 nm logged, 1087 nm to go. Especially for this occasion we saved a bottle of Casal Garcia, our favourite, light sparkling, vinho verde from Portugal. On the rocks! What a delight.

We evaluate our accomplishments and come to the one and only conclusion: we are very priviliged.

Then, early in the morning we pass the 1000 nm to go line. The distances are getting more familiar again. An extra mug of coffee is our reward.

A funny thing, that half-way-point. Immediately after crossing, we start to count down. We want to hurry up now, and take the reefs out.

Although we have 3 reef holes in the sail to reef down, we only have two reef lines in the boom. Therefor we only use the 2nd and 3rd reef hole. We choose these two, because we noticed we hardly ever use only one reef or at least only for a very short periode before we reef down to two.

And finally, we set the clock back another hour. We pass 45°W.
This day therefore counts 25 hours. Hence the more than average amount of miles this day.

But also without the extra hour we have a record. 163 nm in 24 hours.

The FBB acts strangly and we donīt know if itīs working properly, so we make some test calls. Nobody is home, except for Den Helder Rescue, who reads us loud and clear and that is the most important.
But Klaus and Edo recognize our number and call us back a little later. A small chat. Great!

Vandaar!)

of

- P.Cornelissen).
Wat een sport...

Wordt vervolgd.

"Sailing is a bipolar activity"
(Just started a book on neuro-psychology. Hence the bipolarity!)

or

"An early bird is a catīs bird..."

It was to be expected after "Celebration-day"...
Already during happy hour the wind drops. Margalliti is rolling violently and the wine disappears in the ocean. We set the jib to calm down the rolling and we think it works. Since we need to charge the batteries, we start the engine. At least some progress.

Indy, the windvane, doesnīt like motoring, so we also start the electric autopilot. Already after a few minutes it doesnīt want to hold its course anymore. Same problem as before. A lot of jittering. We donīt know what to do to fix it and switch it off. Jaap will take the helm himself. Urgently we need a new, reliable autopilot.

Just half an hour before we have contact with Jan and Annelies (SV Anna Sophia), who are already in Trinidad. We tell them proudly how perfect everything is going and that even if the wind drops, we can switch on the engine, because we still have enough diesel to cover the remaining 900 miles. At that time we donīt know yet that maybe the engine wants to run that long, but that we donīt want to steer for 900 miles.

Now we float with 4,5 knots to the west. At least in the right direction. What a sport...

To be continued.

132 1469 705 12°40'N - 049°58'W ENE 3-4

We zetten grover geschut in. De Bollejan (= gennaker = A-symetrische toerspinnaker) komt tevoorschijn. 120 m2 extra zeil.

Heerlijk.

We varen weer.

We go for it, and put in the gennaker. 120 m2 extra sail.
The 120% genoa on starboard on the spinnakerpole and the gennaker on portside on the boom (see Christmas card 2011 -nfm37- how that looks like).

It ads 1,5 to 2 knots to our speed, but more important is that the extra speed stops the rolling. Miraclelously, the autopilot has decided to start working again too. So, we are happy again.

To cool down we splash buckets of oceanwater on ourselves. The water temperature is about 26-27°C*. Wonderful.

* By the way, thatīs also the minimum temperature necessary for hurricanes to develop, but thatīs something we donīt want to think about right now.

The water is extremely soft, we both agree upon. Is that possible or is it a mid-ocean-hallucination?

Everything goes fine, untill in the middle of the night, during Jaapīs watch, the gennaker frees itself from the deck. Itīs like a colourful but useless flag now in top of the mast. All hands on deck. Fortunately itīs full moon, so enough light. Soon the sail is on deck again.
Different causes: the new stainless steel band is not stainless and the straps are to week. Pff...
Jaap makes a temporary repair and by daylight things will be repared thoroughly. At least we are sailing again.

One more small hick-up when "somebody" thinks to hoist the gennaker all by him/herself. The result is a genuin double hourglass. This takes care of the morning excercise.

More ocean-baths are to come. Also because itīs getting warmer by the day. Inside itīs 32°C.
Although we have some 500 liters of water in the tanks, a nice, cool, fresh water shower is not on the menu. So we take the ocean-bucket-shower. A little bit sticky (to put it mildly) we are by now.

In één woord geweldig.

Today it is my turn to make a contribution to our logbook.
To begin with, it is my biggest sisters birthday, she became 70 today and she doesnīt show it a bit, the way she runs about, and travels. In one word magnificent. Nicolette, happy anniversary.
Furthermore not a lot is happening any more at sea, and Lauraīs pen is empty.

Right then, our voyage is running very prosperous, and although you never know what will be happening in the last 500 miles you cannot imagine it to be more fun than it is to date. Have I been fussy all those years for this? It is almost a pity that the end is near.

And that brings me to the subject for today: īLandfall strategyī:
For us the choice for Trinidad was made some months ago, but how to approach and why.

Firstly we sail around the northern part of the island although the southern route is a little shorter, but ... and this is where the home work gets in.
The two main reasons are:

1. There is a number of cases of piracy known to people approaching from the south, we do not consider that too attractive.
2. Further more and that is a sailors consideration and thus important: the running winds towards Chaguaramaīs bay are usually more favourable taking the northern route than the southern. And the winds at the northern route experience less influence from the Venezuelan landmass effect.

Now that that dice is cast, we determine the point (also known as waypoint) and programme the coördinates in the GPS* This is a navigation instrument that will calculate our course to waypoint, cross track error, our waypoint closing velocity, time to go, etc etc. Like a TomTom in a motorcar.

*Margalliti has originally one of the first ones installed, an AP navigator MK6P of Philips Danmark. I donīt think there has been made a better one since then.Together with the Aries wind vane or favourite pieces of equipment.

The waypoint we have determined lies in the sea straight between Tobago and Trinidad, called īthe Galleons Passageī, and lies between the two lighthouses. One on Trinidad called īGalera pointī and the other on Tobago called īCrown pointī.
The straight is about twenty miles wide and there is a westerly running current the īGuiana currentī of about three knots. Thatīs a bonus.

Because the Tobago side of the straight has a shallow part where you may expect dangerous waves, we choose to enter a little closer to the Trinidad side, say 8 to 10 miles off shore.
That will assure us a safe distance from any rocks and provides two conspicuous orientation points in case we arrive during the night (which we do not want, by the way).

We do like to have some fixed orientation points. You never know if the Americans switch off the GPS satellites for maintenance. We usually prepare a list of lights and buoyīs that we may expect to see.

And in case the Trinidad govīs forgets to switch on the lights, we still have our chart plotter on the computer to tell us where we are.

In other words we will get there. As it looks now we will arrive on dec 4th (give or take a day).
Weīll keep you posted,
For now, Salut! (thatīs French for howdee)

As you may have noticed, we are quite frank when it comes to telling about everything that goes wrong, the misfortunes and the stupidities. For eductional and fun purposes. And to make sure we will remember what to do in the next port.

It may look like a lot is happening, but actually we are quite content about the amount of calamities. Margalliti is doing fine.

So, to make the story complete:

Just before dawn, we notice that the gennaker is ripped. Not really a rip, but a sort of half rip, like the thingy in your pantyhose.
We didnīt hear anything, and also the wind didnīt increase dramatically.
Just bad luck. Anyhow, the sail isnīt that young anymore. First job in Trinidad is looking for a sailmaker

We try to hoist the Ape, a sort of gennaker, but smaller to fly on the mizzen. That doesnīt work. The main sail is in the way. So we hoist the mizzen sail. We have to point a little bit higher, but that doesnīt bother us, we still have to get rid of some X-track error anyway.

Fantasy:
In the beginning of this year Jaap bought me an Ipad. An unnecessary item, I (the ungrateful) thought at that time. In the mean time I canīt live without it. During my watches I read (different books at the same time), play games (Backgammon), watch the stars. In no time at all my watch is over.

Itīs that addictive, that some (irritating) extra skin did grow on the palm of my hand just by holding the pad.
Now, during happy hour, we fantasize about the design of a fancy, trendy, half glove, made out of beautiful Italian leather in different colours, with a clever little pocket to put in a rubber pointing-stick so the screen wonīt get greasy. And this for only..., tja...we just have to examine the price-elasticity.

And then we are going to buy a new gennaker, and a new boat, and a house in France and in Holland and in Portugal, and an Aston Martin, and a...

For the first time since we left the Cabo Verde we see birds in the sky. Two seaguls, to be exact. Not very much. Does this mean that we are closer to land; I thought birds flew everywhere?

As for fauna in general, this trip is not very rich. We expected jumping dolpins and whales and turtles, etc. Hence the column "Fauna". But nothing like that. Well, you canīt have it all.

However, the past two weeks the moon was at its best. Very comfortable that the light is not completely switched off around you. Although you donīt see many stars, but who cares. I can see those on my Ipad.

FLATS... midden in zīn gezicht.

Jaap is jarig. Hiep... hiep... hoera...!

Feest!

SPLASH... straight into his face. A 30 cm long, extra fat, flying fish... BENG ful on his cheek. Like in Asterix and Obelix. Jaap is checking the sails with his headtorch, when this flying seawitch (!) jumps to his head. Obviously they fly towards the light. And how they stink... YACK!

Itīs over with sailing. We already saw it coming on the gribfiles and postponed it for half a day, but now all wind is really gone. So we have to motor for the last 200 or so miles. Itīs a pitty, but we may not complain. Uptill now we have been sailing all the way. Unbelievable.

However, it would be nice if the autopilot wants to do its job. It stopped again, although we removed all metal stuff (toolbox, vacuumcleaner, etc) even further away from the compass. We thought that might do the trick. But no...

Helming the boat yourself is hard now. We are inside because of all the drizzle (= squall with no wind or heavy rain?) and itīs hot... Gallons of water we take in.

And then itīs the 3rd of december. Jaapīs birthday. Hiep... hiep... hoera...!
Against better judgement, Jaap tries for just one more time the autopilot. And, yesss... itīs working. Maybe the electro-magnetic fields had to calm down first. He who knows, may say so! Anyway itīs a very welcome birthday present.

Now a nice extra mug of coffee and some homemade marzipan! Fiesta-time!

Dreigende luchten dichterbij Trinidad

We ruiken land. Een soort natte aarde met gras lucht. Bijzonder.

The closer we come to Trinidad, the more impressive the sky. Itīs like you see all weathersystems at the same time. Unfortunately also lightning.
For me thatīs a lot of stress. Jaap has to come inside, I donīt want him to close to the any metal. Our GPS I put in the oven, hoping that the oven will work as a Farraday box and will protect the GPS.
Itīs only an hour or so, and then I can breath normally again.

We smell the land. Like wet earth and grass. Very special.

In between Tobago and Trinidad the wind picks up. Just a tiny little bit, but enough to roll out the genoa. It gives us exactly the amount of speed we need not to arrive before daylight.

When we enter Chucaramas Bay, Annelies en Jan are already on the pontoon, singing and waving the Dutch flag. Great!

We are still a little confused. Here we are on the other side of the pont, on our first tropical island...!
